Columbia Center Mall

If you are in your teens, or twenties, or maybe your thirties, this is the place to go buy COOl stuff that is terrifically OVERPRICED. It is the Columia Center Mall. Located just up the road from the Island View Grocery, last post, and sitting in front of and north of the Horse Heaven Hills, it was built about 30 years ago. When it was finished, furnished and opened, it changed everything around here. The down town sections of our three cities (Kennewick, Pasco, and Richland) have never been the same. All three were, before the mall (btm) showcases of classy stores to visit. Now they are delapidated, filled with businesses that struggle to make it from month to month (with the exception of the bars and taversn which of course aren't at the mall), and sad to drive through.

Well, anyway, while my wife was inside purchasing a very nice pair of new sweaters (cool and overpriced, but nice) I sketched out this drawing.
watercolor, ink, in sketchbook

  2. Excellent sketch, it is sad that these malls seem to suck the life out of main streets, it happens here in Australia too. But I don't think our malls look nearly so attractive, they are big concrete structures. I have really enjoyed checking out your other work.

  4. Love your sketch. Your comments are applicable to so many smaller cities and town. I call it "the malling of America" (pun intended).

  5. Nice sketch, but ugh to the story behind it. Our cities are all losing their individual character and flavor. You can't tell anymore what city or even what state you're in. They all look appallingly the same...bland and tasteless. Boo hiss to the corporatization of America. All hail to little places like the Island View Grocery.(steps down from soapbox.)
