"Lady in Waiting"

k

She was sitting directly across from me in the doctor's office. I couldn't help wonder why she was here. Hopefully it was nothing serious, still you never know: maybe she was back after an MRI, for consultation and the news wasn't going to be good; maybe she has a life-threatening disease and it isn't responding to the meds like she and her doctor had hoped; maybe she was pregnant - no, not young enough -.

The longer she sat there the more serious I began thinking her problem. She sat very still, deep in thought; she didn't turn the pages of the magazine but stared at one page for a very long time. I thought maybe she knows I am sketching her and she's secretly posing for me. I thought maybe she's in serious pain, but doesn't want to show it.

Soon a young nurse stepped into the room and asked for Mr. So-and-So's wife. She got up and disappeared into the labyrinth of rooms and hallways.

  8. Great job...excellent expression...now, you've got me thinking about what could have been the problem. I know I've sat in doctor's offices before just staring at a page.
