I bought these three tomatoes in the grocery store last November, set them up and photographed them with my digital camera. I have been working on them, off and on, a little bit here, a little bit there, ever since. For weeks I stared at the stems, fearful of what damage I would do with the greens, but last night I sat down and painted them in about 15 minutes.

Jim, those stems look 3-D. I think you did them just right...color and all.
ReplyDeleteThis is really nice. I like the hightlights.
ReplyDeleteWOW!! I don't how you did it -- but they LEPT off the page!! I SWEAR I could reach out and PLUCK them!! SUPER job!! I do think the red is a bit off for tomatoes ... but mercy, they are gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteREally nicely done. The color intensity is just amazing.
ReplyDeleteNice maters.
ReplyDeleteNo critique, just kudos! They are so vivid and wonderfully shaded.
ReplyDeleteOh, and you simply nailed the greens, too -- along with the reds, and the highlights, and the shadows ... Great painting!
ReplyDeletehow can something so plain turn into art when you paint it?? The stems are definately the focus and they seem to want me to pick them up! Nice job, brother!
ReplyDeleteThese look just like the truss tomatoes that I bought at the supermarket this morning. Great Job, Jim, and I like the dark background as a sharp contrast to the red of the fruit.
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Robyn

Nice job Jim. Sometimes the hardest stroke to paint is the first one.
ReplyDeleteOk, this is really a great painting but... I am a bit concerned that you still have tomatoes sitting around since November! Do you live in a refrigerator? LOL Great work.
ReplyDeleteThese tomatoes are will worth the wait, beautiful!
ReplyDeleteTami
Love the deep red color Jim. Tomatoes are my favorite thing to draw, along with pears. :)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous .
ReplyDeleteGorgeous !
ReplyDeleteYou've captured the depth on the stems nicely and the tomatoes are ripe enough to eat-lovely!
ReplyDeleteHi Jim, am about to add you to my blogroll. Thanks for putting me on yours (btw, it's "Blaugustine", not "Blaugastine" - just thought I'd mention it). I particularly love your pencil sketches of people - something about them that is wonderfully free, honest and observant. Don't ever try to "perfect" them!
ReplyDeleteNice work... beautiful deep red... :) found your blog through another artist's blog... hope you don't mind that I've linked to your blog on mine... cheers!
