"Sarah"

Sarah is a live model in our monthly sessions (I would prefer weekly sessions, but hey I'm just someone who shows up). I particularly liked this pose and decided to post it along with my feeble attempt, once I got home, to take the image to watercolor paper.

The drawing is on white sketchpaper with graphite. My digital cam toned it under the direction of a tungsten light bulb. I thought about taking the image into a shade outside to get a better redition, but then, I decided I sorta like this affect.

Critical analysis of these images is welcomed; I feel lost and without a good brush (paddle) when trying to watercolor the human bod.

  1. Jim -- this is really lovely! The graphite drawing is my favorite of the two -- it looks more spontaneous. The watercolor IS good, though! (You're right -- skin tones with watercolor can be really tough.)

  2. Jim,
This is best I have seen of your work so far. You were really 'on' when you did that initial drawing. I agree with Linda, the water color is good (reminds me of Georgia O'Keefe) but the drawing has the energy.

I can tell you did more comparing and measuring as you drew as well. Way to go.

  3. Great job, Jim! I note the feet are too small, though. I always try hard to really look at and carefully draw feet and hands. I sometimes feel that drawing the figure is like riding a 10-speed bike after you haven't done it for a while--there's so much to keep in mind all at once! But this is strong---keep going!

  4. Lovely Jim. I like the purple and yellow working together in the watercolor sketch. The graphite is my favorite of the two. :)
