The Lady Elyot

My rendition of Holbein the Younger's 1543 original of Lady Elyot. Wondering who the Lady Elyot was in history, I found the following commentary on "Little Miss Sunnydale's" Flikr site:

"Margaret was the daughter of Sir Maurice á Barrow. In 1510 she married Sir Thomas Elyot who was a diplomat and humanist scholar. Thomas did not approve of Henry VIII’s marriage to Anne Boleyn and subsequently retired to his Cambridgeshire estates where he focused on scholarly pursuits and on his position as MP. Margaret and Thomas appear to have had no children so upon Thomas’s death in 1546, Margaret inherited his property. Margaret appears to have shared her husband’s interest in learning as this is commented upon in Stapleton’s “Vita Thomas Mori” (1588). Margaret died in 1560 and under her husband’s will their property was left to her husband’s nephew."
