Drawing from a Photo

 Posted by Hello

Someone asked if I ever draw from photos. The photo posted here is from a magazine. I don't remember the name of the magazine, I don't remember the name of the chief in the picture. What I do remember is I was struck by the facial features, the way the light hit the face and the strength in that face. I wanted to draw it, so I bought the magazine, tore the picture out of it and pasted it on the left side blank page in my sketchbook, and drew him out on the right side. I think he's pretty cool and I wish I'd kept the important information: next time.

  3. Jim, among other things, the surface quality of this drawing is gorgeous. And then there's the fabulous mass and volume, the eloquent lights and darks. His character and your feelings about it/him are so well conveyed. Wow.

  4. Don't want to be negative, but you need to measure more. Look at the photo and see where the nostril lines up under the subjects right eye. Now look at where it lines up on your drawing. In the photo the nostril lines up under the middle of the eye.

    Just trying to be helpful.

  5. Chuck, constructive criticism is only positive, never negative, so thank you for your comments. I've only been doing this for a few years now, and I find that "measurement" most challenging! Thanks again.
