Sketchbook Project #6: "Red-Haired Girl"

I am rather wishing I hadn't signed up for this Sketchbook Project project. I got in late, as the deadline to send the sketchbook is January 15, 2011, and I have about a gazillion pages left in this sketchbook they sent. I could rip out some pages, and some of the others say they have, so I think I will continue until I am either sick to death of the whole thing, or until I get to the end of the book.

Finding something to draw is a challenge. I went out into the community for the first few. I prefer sketching places and people in the tri-cities; but I prefer to do it on nice days. The past couple of days have been cold, gray, and rainy.

The next-best option to head into the internet to find images to draw. I belong to flickr.com where there are literally hundreds of thousands of images. This one came from a group in flickr known as "Julia Kay's Portrait Project," where people send in photos of their faces and then they all have this orgy of drawing each other's schnoz's. I belong, but I haven't sent in a pic of myself yet. Too vain, I guess.

Anyway, I found "Marga" and found her "wig" interesting. I'm afraid I've botched, rather badly, this pretty woman's face, but, as I've said before, "Hey, it's art and that's all you can do about it." Or something like that.

Actually, I was quite surprised to see a former student of mine emerge when sketching Marga. If you know, or knew, Miss Sharon Rupert, former student from Prosser High School, then you probably see her here too, sorta, kinda. well, maybe not. Sharon is much prettier than this sketch would lead anyone to believe.

Sharon?

  1. I think you're on to a good thing looking on flickr when you can't get out. Stick some pages together, that's less to do?

  2. Actually, I like this portrait. Good idea to sketch indoors on those nasty weather days.

  3. I had to laugh when I read your post. I, too, joined the project, and haven't even started yet! You're doing a wonderful job ... keep up the good work. Cathy has a good idea - glue a few pages together for a thicker substrate, not to mention fewer pages to contend with. nancy

  4. Wonderful portrait. And gluing the pages together sounds like a good idea to me!
